Reset your timers: the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is edging closer to launch after 15 years of construction and $10 billion (£7.25 billion) in funding.

NASA’s current outer-Earth observatory, which will succeed the Hubble Space Telescope, is expected to improve our understanding of not just the Milky Way, but also far-off exoplanets and celestial phenomena. The JWST, which is capable of capturing a broad variety of light wavelengths, hopes to detect the Universe’s first galaxies and perhaps find traces of dark matter.

But when will the JWST go live for the first time? What does the observatory have in common with Hubble? And what is the organization’s official mission? All of the answers are listed below.

On October 31, 2021 (Halloween), an Ariane 5 rocket carrying the James Webb Space Telescope will launch from French Guiana. The precise date and time of the launch have yet to be confirmed.

The observatory was expected to open in 2007, but it has been postponed 16 times since then.

NASA expected that the JSWT will be ready by March 2021 in early 2020. Lift-off was delayed once more after the coronavirus pandemic and social distancing constraints forced research delays.

Who is James Webb?

The James Webb Space Telescope is named after NASA’s second president, James Edwin Webb.

Webb was best known for leading Apollo, the space agency that was responsible for the first human landing on the Moon. He did, however, play a crucial role in overseeing the two crewed space programmes that came before Apollo: Mercury and Gemini.

Webb quit NASA in late 1968 to make room for a replacement selected by a new incoming president (Richard Nixon). Neil Armstrong took a giant leap for humanity on the lunar surface many months later (20 July, 1969).

Webb eventually died in 1992, aged 85.

“It is fitting that Hubble’s successor be named after James Webb. We got our first glimpses of the dramatic world of outer space thanks to his efforts,” former NASA administrator Sean O’Keefe said of the observatory’s name. “He led our country on its first exploration voyages, bringing our dreams to life.”

The JWST was originally known as the Next Generation Space Telescope before being named after James Webb in 2002. Yes, it’s all really Star Trek.

What is the size of the James Webb Space Telescope?

The JWST, billed as the Hubble Space Telescope’s successor, is the world’s largest space observatory. Its huge sunshield foundation, which is about the same size as a tennis court, measures 22m by 12m.

Despite being nearly twice the size of Hubble (which is only 13 metres long), the JWST is nearly half the weight at 6,500 kilogrammes.

The gold-plated mirrors on the JWST have a total diameter of 6.5 metres, which is much larger than Hubble’s 2.4 metre plate. Overall, the JWST would have a 15-fold wider field of view than Hubble.

What is the maximum distance that the James Webb Space Telescope can see?

The JWST observatory will use its infrared telescope to research objects that are more than 13.6 billion light-years distant.

Due to the time it takes light to move through the Universe, the JWST will be looking at objects that were created 13.6 billion years ago, about 100 to 250 million years after the Big Bang. This is the farthest back in time that mankind has ever seen.

What would the orbit of the James Webb Space Telescope be?

The JWST would orbit the Sun after launch, travelling up to 1.5 million kilometres from Earth in temperatures as low as -223°C.

The Moon is 384,400 kilometres away, while the Hubble Space Telescope is just 570 kilometres above our earth. Since the JWST will be too far from Earth, it will not be able to be serviced by astronauts in the event of a malfunction.

What is the mission of the James Webb Space Telescope?

The JWST has many mission objectives since it is the result of an international partnership between NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA).

There are some of them:

(2)Investigate the formation and evolution of galaxies.

(3).Investigate the atmospheres of faraway exoplanets.

After launch, the JWST is expected to run for five years. NASA, on the other hand, hopes that the observatory will last more than ten years.

Unfortunately, the observatory will not be able to run indefinitely: despite being largely operated by the sun, the JWST needs a small amount of finite fuel to keep its orbit and instruments in place.
